I have just moved in with my boyfriend and brought my cat with me. She is in the process of shredding his leather loveseat and I just don't know what to do to prevent her from doing this. She never clawed anything up before this. Help!

And yes, we do have a water spray bottle to use if we catch her in the act, but often we don't, especially since we both work all day. And when I take her Thursday for her rabies shot, we will schedule her to get declawed...I've already talked with the vet briefly about doing this, before moving in.

She does have two scratching posts (I recently bought her a new one), plenty of toys, etc.

She will be getting declawed, front only, there is no dissuaying me from that.

As I stated, she will be getting declawed (front only). The rate she's going to town on the couch, I would have to give her up and she is a rescue cat who was already returned from 2 other households. And I think having her claws as her defense is the least of her problem should she get out. We live near busy main roads, so a car would likely get her before a wild animal will. I will look into the doublesided tape, though. The vet did mention the little covers, but he said they are pretty much a joke. I go to vets that specifically see only cats by the way with many years of experience between the three. He reassured me that this procedure would be safe for her, just the recovery time may be slightly longer than for a kitten.

Good for you for making the informed decision to declaw your cat. You will be so much happier. Both of our cats are front paws only declawed and we ALL are living in peace and harmony together now. Don't let people shame you into thinking you're the worst person in the world for declawing. Your cat will still have all the defenses it needs. It still has back claws AND KNOWS HOW TO USE THEM if needed for defenses. It still has teeth for defense also. Your cat can do all the cat like "clawing" it wants to and you won't have to get after it for doing what comes naturally. Believe me....YOU'RE GOING TO BE SO HAPPY!
Good for you!

Ok i have 2 cats i had the same problem. Some people look at declawing at mean and cruel. I would definitely not agree. Is it better to get a cat declawed and have them for a lifetime or let them rip all your stuff to shreds then get rid of them? I had both my cats declawed. Front only, this way if by chance they do EVER get out they still have a way to defend themselves. Alot of groomers also put "cat tips" on they're nails. This is harmless to the cat and maybe a good way to stop the scratching until your appt to get her declawed. Its not very expensive either.
Good Luck!

I do not believe in declwing cats. My cat used to tear up anything wood. They sell stay away spray for cats. This is very useful if your cat is only scrathing on that one peice of furniture. That means she prefers that to the posts. Spray it on there until she stays away from the chair. Also, they sell double sided tape that you put on the places where the cats scratches. Their paws stick to it a little, so they cant scratch. Neither of these products will harm your kitty. Try these before you resort to declawing him.

Go to the pet store and ask about products that may keep her form scratching
If you declaw her and let her out she could get attacked by and animal and she would have no protection.

There is a cat safe and furniture tape. Put it on the couch and she will stop. It will not harm her. Cats hate the feeling of tape on their and they will leave them the area alone. Get a a scratching post. DON'T GET HER DECLAWED CHECK OUT THE WEB SITE I HAVE ENCLOSED. If she gets out, she can't defend herself. It's cruel....
