There are a couple places to start saving for college, but I recommend doing it in your name instead of your kids because if they need financial aid at some point in the future their savings will be held against them at a higher percentage rate than you. The best place to start is with your state college savings plan because sometimes there might be some added benefits to it.. The second place is start a 529 plan with an outside organization other than the state itself. Third, if you save only a little each month, I recommend opening a savings account then CDs. Finally, I recommend no matter what joining Upromise which can help you save for college based on a percentage of products you buy.

I don't understand - do you mean a plan to start saving for their college education now?

In that case, check to see if your state offers a prepaid education program (529). It allows you to pay for your children's college ahead of time with the ability to change the beneficiary, should one of your children not decide to go.

The prepaid covers in-state undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees for full-time students at public schools and in private schools it typically covers payments with a cap equal to the tuition and fees of the highest public school in the state.

Many states also offer education savings trust (ex: the one in Virginia is called VEST) via a program like CollegeWealth. It allows you to save for college, but not prepay.

Typically you are allowed to have both.
