My husband and I had some friends over this weekend, and we were playing with our cat as usual, which includes smacking his buttocks.

Our cat really loves it, it makes him purr and be really affectionate.

Two worries:

1) Does this mean that we are into some form of S & M beastalty?

2) Are we causing him any physical problems, such as possibly inducing arthritis at an earlier age?

Our guests really couldn't believe how hard we smack him, and we tried to get them to smack him the same way, but the couldn't bring themselves to do it.

I don't think you can ever smack a cat hard enough!

Cats also purr when they are unhappy - it is their only way of showing emotion so maybe it doesn't like it!
Also i would suggest that it is wrong to hit a cat because you could be damaging its insides unknowingly!

your friends are right if your hitting the cat hard it's abuse, and needs to be stopped, the cat just likes the attention ,not the hitting
