Much of a muchness. You can go up the Newell Highway through western NSW and cross from Dubbo to Tamworth and continue up the New England which is not a bad road at all. The quickest would be via Sydney. Take the Hume Highway, which is nearly all freeway now to Sydney. Use the new ring-road to get from Liverpool to Hornsby and then straight up the Pacific Highway to Byron Bay. Much of the Pacific Highway is divided road or freeway now. It's about 1700km so you'll probably want to take two days.

Don't speed, you'll get caught.

Never been to Melbourne, but i can suggest that once you hit Sydney and beyond that you head for the New England Hwy. We live on the Mid north coast of NSW and the Pacific HWY is the absolute pits - mind you there have been a few improvments, but not enough for me to reccomend it. The New England HWY Will take you through Tamworth armidale and all the way to Brisbane. Quite a beautiful drive in Autumn as well. By far safer and easier on the car.
