Absolutely not! I would hope that everyone asks someone they admire to stand up for them... I'd really hate to think that you had to choose someone you looked down on!
Or are you thinking that somehow it would be degrading for someone of superior professional or social standing to play a secondary role? It isn't... it's a position of honour... unless you're a Moonie there is normally only one bridge and one groom per wedding :)

If you're talking about a superior at work, and you're not good friends with him, then it's not a good idea. (I don't mean it's "disrespectful", just that it would be better to ask someone else.)

No, it's not, that is the idea. Pick someone you look up to, who will do the job.
Picking your best buddy is great, but better to pick someone who you can depend on to show up, sober, and be supportive of you.
