Shianti is also a sweet red wine, and sherry. And also previously noted, look for raspberry or blackberry wine as a substitute.
Red wine is an aquired taste. Nobody's born with a love for the taste of Merlot. Start with something sweet and work your way up, and eventually you'll get used to it.
By definition, port wine is made to be sweeter. It is fermented for a shorter time span, allowing more of the sugars to remain as sugar. So this would be a good place to start.

Hi Have you ever thought of going to a wine tasting.
It would help, that way you get to try and taste.
Try some rather nice italian reds. Try some light " Pinot Noir"
.There are some nice sweet Bubbly reds. Also a Lambrusco is a sweet red. (Italian) .
Good luck. However you don't have to follow what your friends are drinking. Find something YOU ENJOY. Don't worry what they think. Each to there own I say.

Don't worry about what everyone else drinks. If you prefer white, order that. Most traditional reds are going to lack the sweetness you want. Those that are sweet may have had sugar added which indicates a lack of quality and can give you a blazing headache later.
My personal preference for reds are Australian; I have yet to experience any that were sweet like whites.

just order what you want to drink. if you were in my circle of friends, i could honestly care less what you drank. So long as you were sociable and joined the group out for a drink.
most of my friends drink beer or hard liquor. I usually am the oddball with wine.

Try 'Lambrusco soave'; it's a very nice, red, 'sweet' Italian wine to drink cold;)
