Well, since belief in religion (or lack thereof) is supposed to be completely separate from our government and laws - that whole separation of church and state thing - I wouldn't have any problem supporting a politician who was an avowed atheist, so long as his/her politics agreed with mine.

Definitely. Their thinking might be more logical. At least they wouldn't screw with the Laws that God put in place long ago. From gay Canada. I had no objections to civil marriage between same sex couples, but the majority wanted no change to the definition of marriage. Now I am captive in a country that does not support the wishes of the people. Democracy running amok I'd say, but pretty normal for a bunch of self serving crooks. People don't realize it, but now they have the right by Law to retranslate the Bible, taking all references against homosexuality out. I wonder what it will read like in about 50 years or so, will we recognize it? So far, the "devil" is jumping up and down with glee.

Absolutely. Religion is irrelevant to the secular business of government. Similarly, I would vote for a deeply religious candidate if they realised the divide between individual belief and secular government should never be crossed.

As for those arguing about 'accountability', has it occurred to you that atheists tend to live more moral lives as, since we don't believe in an afterlife, we think every day we have in our limited lifespan is precious? An atheist doesn't need a carrot and stick to make good life choices, they just need to understand their society and respect its laws and morals.

I am waiting. Yes, if an atheist and a religious politician both have issues I agree with, I will choose the atheist.

A persons spirituality shouldn't affect how he/her does their job. The same should be for politicians.

But, I have to say, there can be problems.

Religion is a big motivator. This is why politicians sell themselves on their values. If you dont agree with their particular relgion, you probably dont agree with their values, and so you wouldn't vote for them.

The exception to the rule is George W Bush, who for some reason has been kept in office dispite his views and actions.

-A person's belief are an important factor in my voting. Atheism however is not a belief, but the absence of one. It should not be used as determining factor by itself.
-It is a common mistake to equate Atheism with Nihilism. The simple means without (A) a belief in God, or Gods (Theism), and implies no other belief or characteristic.

Yes. His/her lack of religion has nothing to do with my country being at peace, me having a good paying job, healthcare, education etc. I vote based on politics which is not the same as religion

No. Too many atheists talk about doing away with religion all together so I would not trust that politician.

May God Bless you.

Definitely! The ability to be an effective public servant has nothing to do with an individual's belief system.
