I live in Greece and to say the roads here are dangerous is an understatement. The chances of having an accident are very high. I am pregnant and thinking of the safety of my child, which is the safest car to buy? I want something that wont crumple in a collision, apart from a tank I just don't know what to look for. We don't have thousands to spend, up to 15,000 Euro.

Chopper, I have a hard enough time convincing my hubby to give up his bike!! He thinks our child will go on the back with him!! I have seen BABIES on motorbike handlebars here, it beggars belief!!!

Look at the crash test results on the Euro-NCAP website at http://www.euroncap.com/content/safety_ratings/introduction.php
They test most new cars, and often include a child dummy in a good child seat in the test, so they can assess safety for both adults and children.
Buy something with at least 4 stars for both adult and child occupant protection.

I researched this for my wife and daughter recently. I purchased a Mercedes Benz ML320 for my wife to drive. It comes standard with every safety feature imaginable, including front and rear side airbags, full time four wheel drive and stability control. I don't know what a used one would cost in Greece, but I bought a 2000 model last year, with 46,000 miles, for $18,000 in the U.S. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

As has been stated by other posters, the Volvo is also a very safe vehicle.

Modern cars are designed to crumple in a collision as a way of absorbing the shock.
The most dangerous thing is the nut holding the steering wheel.
