That was someone's idea of a good idea, which I think stinks. I was in the Security Police in the Air Force, and we changed over to the dark blue beret in 1975 right as I joined the service. I have NEVER liked the beret from day one! It offers NO protection from the elements, NO shade for your eyes from the sun, it fades, it's hot in the summer, it weighs a ton when it gets wet, and looks different on everyone who wears it. If you take 50 people and line them up, all wearing a beret, you're gonna find at least 30 different ways to wear it!

When the Army went to a black beret for the regular forces, I thought they did the Rangers a grave injustice. The Rangers earned their black beret, and the beret sets people apart from the regular troops. Now the whole Army looks the same, and I hate it.

Just as bad as wearing the beret in the summer heat is wearing the damn thing in the winter. It does nothing then either, wind freezes your ears off! I wish either the PC (baseball-like cap) or the Boonie (the wide 360 degree brimmed hat) in the summer and in the cols winter I wish the Army issued Radar hats (a normal wool winter hat with a small bill for sunshade). That would be nice!

Honestly that was one of the perks to a combat area....no berets. I hate those things. Great with the class A, but ridiculous otherwise.

We can all thank Gen Shinseki for this one! Originally us high speed SF soldiers and rangers wore berets (green and maroon for SF air borne etc) Black for ranger. Now all the normal Pouge *** army wears black rangers got a nice looking tan color and sf and airborne kept the green and maroon ones. Now do most people hate the beret hell ya! It offers no sun protection black wool is quite hot and its a pain in the *** to shape shave etc. However if your high speed you know how to shape it quite nice including cutting the inside down and crazy gluing the fold. I think it looks really great with dress uniform better than the "**** cap" but do I wish we could go back to soft cap with acu's hell ya! give me head gear I can pull out of my pocket and slap on my head with one hand any day especially now that I have to wear the same old black beret every one else does. ....Shadow Stalker P.S going from a combat arms MOS and unit to a regular army MOS (even 31b 31d , 31e etc) to a support unit sucks! blame that one on getting shot grumbles*

I always figure a general's wife wanted to play with her toy soldiers. There is nothing more stupid than being forced to wear a black wool hat with no visor in the middle of the summer heat.

Did you see the old dress green's pecked cap? It was awful. The military has constantly sought to up date and modernize the appearance and usefulness of its uniforms. This was change was a generally accepted improvement.
