I think it sounds like he is just getting into a fantasy and I wouldn't worry about it. If you want him to stop saying it tell him.
One of my guy mates did a similar thing to a girl he loved and lost her. He regrets it because it wasn't meant in the way she took it. This may be a different situation but just go with your gut. You say you really love each other so thats all you need to know.

It could also be a sign to be worried about.

Ask him about it? What could it hurt? If he was joking around, tell him you don't like it and why you don't like it. The most important thing in maintaining a good relationship is communication.
