Yes, they can make an artificial disk to replace the degenerated disk. Also there are implants that are placed on the spine that controls the pain, some use medicines others electrical current. There have been many advances on back surgery. I personally recommend you see a chiropractor before you do something as radical as surgery. Chiropractors are the best specialists for treating low back pain. I've enclosed a link where you can find a qualified chiropractor in your area in the USA.

As we grow older the disc loses water content and this is called degeneration of the disc. A degenerated disc is part of normal aging!!!
If it is in a weight bearing location or damaged it sticks out and may pinch a nerve. We call it a slipped disc. This causes radicular pain and weakness.
Studies are now showing that there is no difference between conservative measures vs surgical intervention.
If you do not have deficits or the pain is tolerable do not do surgery!! the long term outcome is worse and you will still be on pain medications

Hi,
You should see surgery as the very last resort when you back and spine are concerned. I've seen plenty of folks take this option and be full of regret later when they find their back problem is worse than before the surgery.
If you problem has been diagnosed then consider all the options very carefully and make sure you get a second opinion too.
You may want to take a look at: www.goodbyetobackpain.org
It could help you and avoid the need for what is invasive/tricky surgery.
