Taiwan - short of some nationalist surgence has no reason, economically or politcally to declare independence.

China would invade, the USA may respond but unless there was a gradual build up it would not be able to prevent an invasion. Once there, the USA would be helpless to get the Chinese out of Taiwan.

Taiwan is much better of with the status quo until China's gradual move towards capitalism is complete. Then, I could see unification taking place in a style similar to Hong Kong.

taiwan is independent already and china just don't want to acknowledge it. the funny thing is that the people in taiwan just pretend they don't know about it or has forgot about it. the usa knows about all these and won't say anything because this way usa can continue to sell arms to taiwan while being china's best friend. this is the so called "status quo". russia and japan are sitting on the side line waiting for something to happen and trying to find out if they can get a piece of the pie so they can benefit from a stupid war.

I think a war would happen. China or Russia would be unbeatable on their own homeland as far as trying to subjugate the populace, just as Iraq is unbeatable in the same context.

If China attacks Taiwan, the US will attack. China will become a smoldering ruin. Effectively ending that countries' only claim to fame as the worlds most populated country, and move them somewhere behind Tahiti.

Touchy question of the past 60 years. China says it's part of China, the US stands to defend it. Last vestige of the cold war.
I pray we never have to find out who is the baddest; it wouldn't be good for anyone. i would rather make friends than enemies.
