Go here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/stats.asp and look at the second chart - the one that shows interest by brand name. The best brands are indeed the ones in the top part of the chart. And vice versa.

Here's a listing in order by ratings. You can pick out the "better brands" from this chart.

Another good rule. Even if you don't buy from them, check with B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping). If B&H does not sell the brand you are looking at, don't bother buying that brand.

Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

There's no answer to that question. Canon is pretty good from $100 point & shoots, all the way to +$6000 professional dSLR cameras. But they might not make the best camera for YOU. Perhaps Nikon, Sony, Fuji or one of the other brands has exactly what you're looking for.
It's like asking what's the best car brand. Toyota? Ford? Mercedes? It all depends on what you're looking for.

The answer is Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fugi and Olympus. You must decide. There may be a partiular feature you like, like a lot of optical zoom. Check out Website dpreview.com
I personally own a Sony with lots of zoom.

Olympus is excellent for medium price range cameras, anything up to 10mp.
