There are several different regions across the world, with the US/Canada being region 1, Europe/South Africa being region 2, etc. There is also a Region-free coding, or Region 0, which can play on all players.

Basically, the players brought in a specific region will all support that local region. You may be lucky to get a player with additional coding that will allow it to play other regions. For example, if you can get your hands on a Region 0 player, then it is likely to play the majority of any disks in the world. There are some exceptions, such as Region Encoded (RCE) disks, which can cause region-0 players problems, but those are fairly rare now.

The attached link shows a map of the various region codes available and where.
