The British Dietetic Association guidelines state that an average adult should consume 2.5 litres of water per day. This intake needs to be increased during periods of hot weather or during and after periods of physical activity.
You can get your daily water requirements from sources other than pure water - your cup of tea counts! Water is the main ingredient of all drinks – carbonated drinks and still drinks, fruit juices and fruit and vegetables all have a high water content.

The advice to drink at least two liters of water every day seems to be a piece of common knowledge that "everyone knows", isn't backed up by studies, as far as I can tell.

My own theory is that sailors discovered by trial and error that they needed a gallon of water daily to remain in good health. Considering the strenuous native of seafaring life and the food based on salted meat, the idea developed that landsmen, with more sedentary lives, only needed about half as much water. At least, that is my theory, for good or bad.

The best answer of course is that water needs vary for person to person and time to time, depending on health and activity levels. Below is a calculator I found online to determine an individual's water needs. It may or may not be helpful.

Our daily need of water is mainly covered through drinking. On a daily basis we need to drink about 1,5 - 2 litres of water. Foodstuffs that have high moisture contents also contribute to our water supply. With our food we absorb about 1 litre of water a day.
Our total required amount of water is 2,5 litres a day. If we drink enough water and eat enough water-containing food, this should not be a problem.
How much water we drink is determined by our habits, not by thirst. When we feel thirsty, this usually is a sign that we have not been drinking a sufficient amount of water.

Two is recommended, but I tend to drink twice that (about four litres a day), and more if I've exercised (usually a couple more litres).
