I'm looking for a Christian monestary, preferably. I'm not running from anything. It's just that, this american culture makes me want to vomit. Thats not an expression, there have been times I have nearly vomited when viewing the filth of this culture.

Do you really believe that this is the right path to find a monastery?

Anyway, I wish you luck.

(Yet, rethink your decision....)

If you want to enter a monastary, why are you unwilling to take the time to go through whatever steps it takes to get there? I think some monastaries allow people to stay there for a time, but that is not the same thing as becoming a member of the community, that involves the steps to enter a Priesthood of some kind or other. That you aren't particular about where, as long as you can go there immediately, makes me wonder what the heck you are running away from, because it sounds more like you are looking for a hideout, than a life of service and contemplation...You havn't even specified if you are looking for Buddhist, Franciscan, Jesuit, or what? Doesn't sound like you are too particular there, either...

Edit: Okay, well that is a better explanation, can't say as I blame you for thinking American culture is a good reason to barf, I have days like that my self. Do you feel you have a "calling" for the Priesthood though? "Stop the world, I wanna get off" still sounds like a desire to escape somewhat. I haven't heard you express a "calling" but a desire for more simplicity in your life. If you do have a "calling" then you could try talking to a Catholic priest about how to go about it. If it is that you simply need more simplicity in your life, try looking around some, there are communities built around the idea of living a less hectic existence, or maybe you just need more chances to re-charge your batteries away from the racket of telephones, and televisions. If that is the issue, camping is good for that. Defining your life in the simplest terms possible, when you are camping, you only worry about meeting the simplest of needs for food , shelter, and warmth, in an environment surrounded by nature, where you can just be yourself without the distractions for awhile, and come back feeling a little more rested and empowered to deal with it, even a day or two here and there can make a difference. Some folks out there go as far out as they can and live "off the grid", sustaining as low impact a lifestyle as they can manage. Sometimes I go to hole up in a little cabin in the woods for a week, or go tenting, and don't let anyone know where I am all week, without electricity, phones or anything. It gives me a chance to spend that time in prayer, meditation, or just enjoying the quiet.
Edit: I just did a bit of searching around on the web. If you have a calling to monastic service, by all means go for it, and talk to a priest to help you learn the steps involved in contemplative service. If the issue is that you need a simpler and more fulfilling lifestyle, I just found a directory with a *whole bunch* of links to what are known as "intentional communities". Some of these are based on religion, some are based on the ecology, and some are just people who want to stop the world and get off, who just want to live more simply. I think I will be giving this list a good looking over myself! :) Whatever you decide about it, good luck to you....
