Your tonsils are only necessary when you are a baby or child, because it is an essential part of your immune system at that stage. However when you get older it can get infected by bacteria, which will continue to infect you and make you sick over and over and over, even if you take antibiotics. My brother (age 24) got sore throats, colds and flu almost every two months until they remove it. Afterwards his health improved drastically. I would say up to age 30 is fine, but I believe the sooner the better.

About 30-50 years ago tonsils were removed from children as soon as they got the cold or the flu bad enough to impede breathing - this was at the 3-7 age group. Since this time it have been identified that tonsil do more than was originally thought with respect to fighting off infections so they don't remove them nowadays as standard like they use to. However they still do get removed from people if the doctor believes that there is a good enough reason for it. My 16 years old got his out as he was suffering from tonsil stones and it was bothering him and he is no happy.
