You could try a heating pad to see if that helps, but I would definitely call your dr to have this situation evaluated to see what could be causing the problem.
As for the medication issue, the dr will work with you to help you figure out the right one that might be safe to try for your pain if medication should be necessary.

the book: treat your own back by robin mckenzie worked great for me
also CERTAIN yoga teachers can help ALLOT others I am indifferent.
ciropractors I've gone to.. some HELP TONS others make you feel like you got hit by a truck
massage can be helpful
drugs just cover the problem and allow it to get worse.
pay close attention to posture. lack of activity and blood circulation form sitting around to much can be just as bad as back breaking work

Welcome to the club!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as u can see, it is 4:00am and i've been up since 2:00am so this is what i do? I have severe scoliosis so i have to take meds but as u can see, i still wake up off and on through the night. All i think to tell you is to go to physical therapy and get massage, etc. Also, HOT showers help ALOT!!!!! DO U know what the problem is? If not, u need to go see an ortho doc asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get an X-ray done and go and see a physiotherapist who would recommend exercises to reduce pain and give heat therapy for the pain.

Ahhhhh.... relief!
Its amazing how comfortable and adjustable it is.
