Well, it’s certainly not a pleasant process, but it’s effective. You have nothing to be worry about, it doesn’t hurt, you just have to sit patiently and wait until it’s over. I went to two separate appointments that lasted an hour each. A dentist numbed that area, and started cleaning. Deep Cleaning is very good because is prevents gingivitis and other gum illnesses. It also prevents a gum bleeding, which affects many people. My gums have receded from the teeth, and that’s why needed a deep teeth cleaning. I had a smooth, clean surface again, so my gums could easily reattach to the teeth.

As for driving yourself, it depends on if you are the kind that needs "laughing gas" or not. Deep cleaning, wow, it could mean a really good leaning of your teeth, or deeper, where they would numb your gums, and deep clean, under the gums-peridontal work. For that, they numb you because otherwise, it could hurt. Usually, from what I understand, when it has been a realy long time (like for you) since you got your teeth cleaned, they would clean under the gums. It possibly depends on how long your appt. is for, but they may need to schedule the regular cleaning now, and the more in depth one in a few weeks. I know what it is like to go for a long time without seeing the dentist. I also know what it is like to go every 6 months for cleaning, and get told no cavities. That part was a few years back. I wish you the best. Take care.

I got a deep cleaning in September of 07. Before she gets the cleaning, she will get shots in her gums to dull the pain. It doesn't hurt that much during, but it will hurt just a little bit after. She will want to avoid hard foods until her mouth stops hurting. Soup is the ideal food after something like that. She will have to go in for maintenance every 4 months until the doctor clears her for every 6 months. When I got my deep cleaning, the dentist did all 4 quadrants at the same time.. it hurt so much because it is impossible to completely numb the entire mouth.

Since you have not been at the dentist for 15 years i would suggest you make them give you some freezing. Deep cleaning refers to removing all the plaque and tartar that have formed over the years, from the tooth surfaces and under the gum. There will be bleeding but you shouldn't feel any pain unless u don't get the freezing. Ask to have only half of you mouth clean at once, then go back again for thw other half. That way you don't get overwhelmed with all the freezing and you don't drool all over yourself. If you don't get any laughing gas you should be able to drive, you can call the dental office and they can tell you for sure ahead of time. After the cleaning you should rinse with warm water and salt, it tastes awful but it really helps firm and heal your gums up.
Good Luck! It's a good step to be going to get your teeth clean:) and don't worry you'll be fine

RE:
I am having a deep cleaning at the dentist tomorrow. What are they going to do to me?
I have not been to the dentist in over 15 years. I am going in to my new dentist tomorrow for what she called a "deep cleaning". What exactly will be done to me? Will it be painful? Will I be ok to drive myself home tomorrow?

Deep cleaning is when the dentist cleans underneath the gum line.
It is a painful process but fortunately the dentist will numb you up (anesthesia injection) before he or she begins the cleaning process. The injection feels like a small pinch without much pain so dont worry too much. The needle used is a real small bore needle.

haha okay to be honest there might be a little pain. 15 years!?!?! why haven't you been to the dentist in over 15 years? new cavities could've formed and it may be too late to fix some stuff. as annoying as this sounds, you should go 2 times a year! anyways, the dentist may start off by checking for any cavities or rotten teeth. then she'll clean your teeth and scrape off the plaque and drill teeth that have a lot of plaque on it. she might go very near to the gumline too since plaque collects there. she probably will drill the back of your teeth. maybe flouride will be used to help protect your teeth. she may floss your teeth (ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch) and i think thats about it. good luck you'll be okay. maybe a little bleeding but you'll be fine!! as long as she doesnt extract any teeth
