When my children turned 7 and 8 (same week), I secretely made them a giant, one layer birthday cake. It was life size of the two children holding hands and I decorated it to look exactly like them. It took four men to carry the cake to the park for the party. The children loved it.

Lobster with Champagne Vanilla Sabayon with wild mushroom salad- I believe this was difficult because
1. I never made it before
2. The ingredients are expensive and I was nervous I was going to screw it up
3. It was New Year's Eve

Venison Steaks
1. See # 1 above
2. Time consuming-It was first marinaded overnight then I had to make a brown sauce then I had to reduce the marinade and combine the two to make another sauce
3. Trying not to overcook or undercook game meats is frustrating

Any frosted layer cake
1. I am not a baker
2. My cakes are always crumbly and hard to frost
3. I don't have a cake decorator's talent

All in all the first two dishes came out wonderful but I have yet to attempt to make them again.

Smoked my own salmon. Had to put together a cardboard box smoker (a la Alton Brown) and sit outside with it for six hours drinking frosty beer. Oh the horror!

EDIT:
I make my own fish and chips. Usually takes the better part of the evening from preparing the mise en place, to final cleanup.
But it is soooooo worth it

I make these authentic desserts from Italy and they always take me several hours but its so worth it... they always are soo tasty... but the longest project i have done is a ginger bread house this past Christmas... it took me 6 hours to get the shapes correct and onto cookie sheets to bake... it was horribly tedious but i did it and my little brothers ate most of it... bahhh never again... ill stick with store brand... hehe

Chicken Rogan Josh
It took me 4 hours of laborious work, but it was worth it in the end. The taste was fabulous. My only regret is that I didn't make enough!

My enchiladas. I make the tortillas from scratch. I make the beans and rice from scratch including boiling the beans first. I make the mole from scratch. It literally takes me all day, I have to start early in the morning.

lobster mournay from scratch, it was good because I knew that the lobster was fresh and not frozen like it usually is in restaurants, but not worth all the trouble.
