There's a very similar word in Italian which means 'fellow countryman', usually in reference to a particular region.

I think you mean "paisano" which sounds like Eng. "pie + sahno". This is both an adjective, meaning "from the same country" and a noun meaning "fellow countryman", "compatriot". In the Cono Sur region of Latin America, it can also have the meanings "foreigner", "Arab", "Chinaman" and "Spaniard".

You may be thinking of the Italian paisano, which means "fellow countryman" and might be used as a greeting, but is often shortened to paisan and used as an anti-Italian slur.
