There is nothing like the misguided perception that someone has God's backing to persuade a person to do evil most vile, as shakespeare (i think) said. However, all religion, whether it be Christian or non, were designed to bring out the best in people. When people stop realizing that they are only good because they are trying, and start using self-righteousness to support wicked deeds or selfish actions, then there is no excuse nor blessing for what they are doing. Hypocrisy is roundly condemned by ALL faiths.

I am afraid I have to disagree.

The two most evil organizations in the 20th century, the Nazi Germany and the Communist USSR were atheistic in outlook.

Also, many evil people use "religion" as a pretext to forward their own agendas and are not really religious at all.

With love in Christ.

Right on! The Scribes, Pharisees, and the High Priest ordered Jesus's Crucifixion. Had they known they would never have crucified the Lord of Glory. (Bible) That fits for me. So God used there dementia to save those who would believe in Jesus name. (The High Priest put the passover lamb (Jesus) to death at the exact moment of the fulfillment of passover described as a perpetual sacrifice in Exodus and never knew it) Oh the riches of the Glory of God!

Possibly, 'conviction' is more to the point than religious belief. Conviction arises from desire and brings with it fear of loss or fulfillment.

Desire for righteousness (inquisition). Desire for power (Hitler). Desire for safety (War on terrorism) Desire to possess love (crimes of passion). Desire for eternal life (religious terrorism) Desire to control. (Domestic abuse)

When such desire can be formulated within a belief system, whether it's religious or political or ideological, numbers increase as well as potential. Whether this potential is seen as good or evil often depends on which side of the fence one is standing.

I don't know. I've know some people who feel greater joy in revenge and retaliation. They enjoy the sense of power it gives them to destroy another and be the "top dog". Besides, some of the worst evil has been perpetrated by those who deny religion, example: Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

It has been my sad and shocking experience that this is indeed the case. Great mischief and harm is done by many who claim to be true believers, in the name of the Lord.

So right!. Look at the record of the Catholic church during the INQUISITION. One so called religious man was responsible for all that.
And before that, the Crusades.
The so called 'Christian' knights spared no one.
