By adding shortcuts to programs you want to load at startup or removing shortcuts to programs you do not use daily.

When you add/remove from the startup menu, you are removing the shortcuts, not the programs. A word of caution -- if you are not sure what you are removing - let it alone.

How to Remove Items From the Start Menu
STEP 1: Click Start.
STEP 2: Click Settings.
STEP 3: Click Taskbar & Start Menu.
STEP 4: Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
STEP 5: Click Remove.
STEP 6: Click the item you wish to remove, and then click Remove.
STEP 7: Repeat Step 6 for additional items.
STEP 8: Click Close.
STEP 9: Click OK.

Tips:
Click the plus sign (+) to the left of a folder to access items in the folder.
All items on the Start menu are shortcuts. Deleting the shortcut does not affect applications or documents.
While you are removing items, take advantage of the opportunity to reorganize folders or add new ones.

You can resize the start up menu by resizing the screen resolution in your control panel.

Go to:

Start > Control Panel > Display Properties > Settings > Screen Resolution.

Adjust it to suit your needs, then click apply

I hope this helps...
