im friends with a satanist and a few wiccans for that matter.ive heard that as christians we should watch the company we keep but wouldnt it be better to learn from other people and be a witness for God from our actions instead of saying i cant be friends with you and tell them theyre evil?

I'm a Christian and have had Satanist friends. If I spent my whole life avoiding people with different religious beliefs, that would be a pretty pathetic excuse for a life. And how can a person show Christian love to others if he or she can't even manage to treat nonbelievers in a civil way?

No, its not good. A friend is someone who encourages you and you can be accountable to eachother. A satanist will be worldly and just steer you away from the truth of God. He will make what is evil look right and ok to do and you will follow him. People act like those they hang around with. (Proverbs 12:26 - A righteous man is cautious in friendship,
but the way of the wicked leads them astray.)

You can still be friendly to this person (as an aquaintance instead) and pray for them but if you are a Christian you need godly friends. Go to a mens bible study you will have lots of friends from that. Please see these verses as well. Psalm 1:1, 2 Cor 6:14, Eph 4:27

Your point is valid, but how close are these friendships? The problem comes in when they start to convince you of their beliefs. If you stay among unblievers, God will let you start to slip in your beliefs. He's not going to MAKE you do what's right. Choose you this day who you will serve. Be a witness for God to them by all means, but remember that their beliefs are directly and diametrically opposed to your own. I sincerely hope you have some strong Christian friends as well.

As long as you both respect each other and your right to have your own beliefs yes. And that means that you don't do anything or go anywhere where you are uncomfortable for your friend's sake, and that you don't insist that they go anywhere or do anything that they would be uncomfortable with. Actually there are many Christians who are friends with people who practice other religions.

Now if you mean a "devil-worshiper" and not a Satanist the answer might be different, as I wouldn't imagine that many would respect your views, or that you could in good conscience respect theirs.

I'm really pleased by most of the answers here. I thought there'd be a whole mess of Holy Rollers wailing about sin and judgement and damnation, but mostly the answers are from sensible people who do NOT judge but simply let people be who they are.

I've never met a Satanist in my life, but I can't see them as being up to anything good. I may be wrong. But I'm not put on this Earth to judge either.

Cool.

Christian are commanded to be the salt of the earth (read: society).
But we are also instructed not to submit ourselves to other, except to King Jesus.
We live in those norms.
So, as a friend to a satanist, be like salt to him, namely evangelize him, but without the slightest submission to him. That's where the difficulty begins and the snare of the devil started to loops around you. So be aware, and always ask the Holy Spirit to guide you carefully all the time.

We are to love everyone, but that doesn't mean we are to hang out with everyone. The Bible warns of being unyoked in relationships. I believe we are to be loving, caring and sharing our faith with anyone, but being close friends that hang together that can influence you away from Jesus, no. We must be cautious in our friendships, so as not to be led astray. Especially if your faith is not very strong. I know some use Jesus as an example on this ques, as He was with people of ill-repute, but remember, He is God who did not sin and no one influenced Him. He influenced them. You do not have to be "friends" with someone to witness and be loving acquaintenances with them. So, my ans is to be close friends with a satanist, No, but to be acquaintenance and kind to them when you see them, yes.

I think that your want to witness to your friends is admirable. However, you need to be careful about negative changes in your behavior and faith that result from your friendships with this person.

In the Bible when Jesus sent the disciples out to witness to others he didn't send them alone. He sent them in pairs so that they could lean on each other when they needed to and keep them on the right track.

Was it OK for Jesus to befriend Mary Magdalen or live with lepers. You must be strong in who you are but of course you can be friends. The best way to teach is by example (if that is what you want to do).

Jesus was friends with lots of lost people, but his closest friends believed in him. I always tell my children that whomever they spend the most time with, that's who they will become like. The bad tends to pull harder than the good, so watch yourself. Like the proverb says, "Bad company ruins good character."
