My brother in law is an artist... My family and I have many tattoos as well (full back Asian Arts: Dragons, Phoenix birds, Tigers, Characters, etc.)
You should not use Vaseline during the healing stage because it does not contain the medications needed for such antibacterial & vitamins to help the skin heal safely.

After 5 days, switch to lotion like Lubriderm, Keri, or Vaseline. To smooth out the skin.
It's been 10 years since I got my first one (i have 6 fairly large ones) & I still use vasaline at time before i go out - it helps put a nice shine to the colors.

NO, do not use vaseline for the first couple of weeks. Use the oinment that your tattoo artist suggests. It usually has a petroleum jelly base but has antibiotic properties that your tattoo needs to heal.
When you first get your tattoo, it is like an open wound. You would not put vaseline on an open wound so treat the tattoo the same way.
But once its healed and has peeled, then you can put on vaseline or lotion daily to help keep it moisturized. But you shouldnt do that for at least 2-3 weeks.
Also, make sure to never apply too much ointment. The ointment can brink the ink out of the skin. So after applyin the ointment, lightly pat it with a clean towel.
Good luck!!!

NO NO NO... vaseline can cause your tattoo not to heal properly. Use a VERY THIN layer of A&D ointment for the first few days, and then use a plain lotion for the next few days(you want to make sure it has NO FRAGRANCE!!!) Make sure you don't over moisturize though! If you have any problems or aren't sure what to do though, your best bet is to go back to the tattoo shop where you got it done and ask your artists advice!

I will not bore you with my long listed answer to aftercare questions but I will say this one thing - A&D is still based with petrolatum so it is relatively the same for all those who are posting about it. It makes me crazy that all these people are "authorities."

The reason why artists do not like petrolatum (Vaseline) is that clients always, always put too much on. Then the skin does not properly "close off" and it gets all gooey and it is true that pigment can be lost. It can attact dirt, etc. We have had a client show up to have a look at a "healing" tattoo done at another shop and she had long white cat hair stuck all over the A&D she had on - same thing as Vaseline.

Just whatever you use, be smart about it - wash it and keep it clean, keep your hands off of it , use your aftercare product very conservatively, and listen to your professional tattoo artist.

ya i used that a&d ointment and it has lanolin in it and i got a huge rash all over my back because no air was getting in my skin (my skin needs air or else it suffocates and that happens!) so i use polysporin with vitimins in it i forget exactly what its called, but the doctor said it was ok, and my tattoo artist ok'd it for me and me and my sister both use this on all of our tattoos and have no problems yet. anyway im assuming that vaseline would have a similar skin suffocating action. so theres an alternative if u cant use the a&d ointment

NO. Use the disinfectant cream that you get from your tattoo artist for the first few days, then use Vaseline Intensive care (a lotion, not petrolium jelly!!) on it afterwards.

I have one tattoo done by a well known studio in Chicago and they suggest A & D ointment or Preparation H (yes the hemorrhoid cream...takes down the swelling). Even Neosporin may work.

NO. Use the lotion suggested by the tattoo artist. They wouldn't advise you to use it if they didn't know what they were talking about.
