No, it's tacky to do something like that, I'd never 'buy' anything I intended to return, that's dishonest... then I don't care about stuff much and I certainly don't care what people think of me by my stuff... most of it is second-hand because of environmental reasons, if people don't like that too bad, if they think I'm a tree-hugging hippie they're right :-)

That kind of plan sounds both tacky and foolish. If you are having a party, why have new stuff around that may get broken or otherwise damaged? What kind of impression are you trying to make on your guests and why should you care so much to risk ruin? Bag the tacky behavior and just have a party. Parties are supposed to be fun, not some stressful nightmare complete with returnable coverlets.

There have been many times when I have gone shopping to buy things when I knew I would be having guests. I never returned them (it is tacky). If you need items only for a short period of time, you may want to consider renting items for a party or borrowing. You can also check out eBay for a lot of really great items that you can get for next to nothing in cost.

At the parties I've been to, we hide the vases and lamps, bedding, anything that can be damaged/puked on/jizzed on.
