That depends totally on the person. I usually eat about 1400 calories a day and run a mile five days a week and do half an hour of weights, and that usually causes me to maintain. If I knock it down to 1200 calories a day I can expect to lose about 5 lbs a month or so. I'm 23, 5'8", and was 165 before I got pregnant.
Other people will loose weight easily at the amount of calories it takes me to maintain. If you can swing it, go see a nutritionist. Seeing a nutritionist was what helped me get down to 165 from 210 and I stayed there.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats, take 300-400 calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
5-8servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water a day
5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (breakfast is the most important - make sure to get complex carbs like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit etc)
4-6 times a week cardio for 30-50min, light weight training, many reps
no junk food, no sodas, no alcohol, no white flour (cakes, cookies, white bread, pasta etc.), nothing high in sugar (ice cream)

you will burn about 326 calories after a 3 mile walk, time that by 30 days = 9,780 calories.

A pound of fat is worth over 2,000 calories so you might want to do more exercises. Metabolism plays a role also
