Here is what i think I think if ppl are so worried about pits then there should be rules made for the owning of them! Or really any animal for that matter. banning i think will only cause more problems and wasted money and TO much death....It is wrong to belame a breed that was once seen has Good family pets...when it is NEVER a dogs fault It is the owners....Would this be the staffies to???they are one in the same????
The blind leading the blind! Pits are not the only breed that attacks ppl/kids....they just get the media attention when they do! while cute little fluffy (who is as mean as beans) doesn't get the media's attention for ripping into a childs face for no reason other then POOR OWNERS!!

No. They should be regulated. The owners who develop dogs for fighting and those who mistreat them and keep them tied on a chain because they can't be trusted should be banned.
I have an idea. Cage up an owner, train him to fight like a pitbull and them send him to the ring to experience the real thing, with a pitbull of course. Let's see who wins. After all they want actioln don't they? Give 'em some.
Pitbulls can be sweet but, they are predisposed to be very protective, that is why you just can't trust them. If you have ever been attacked by a dog for no other reason than he got you in his sights you will know what I mean. I was attacked by a doberman, once also known for thier visciousness, and even tho I have trained dogs, I am still leary of dobies. Have you ever seen a picture or in person (like I) of a 3 year old child that has been mauled by a pitbull. It's a sickening sight. And the worst part, the child suffered for about five days and lost his battle for life. It's too sad.
Don't get me wrong, pitbulls are not the only dogs that have that reputation. Rotties have also been abused in that manner, boxers too.

I love my pit bull..I have raised him since he was three weeks old and he will be six in May. He is a great dog. Loyal, funny, protective, my constant companion. It is all in how any dog is raised. I never let my pit off the leash for any reason. I consider myslef a great owner. My son just adopted two 7 week old pups today, they are brothers and they are gorgeous. I have "grand-pit". He is also a responsible owner. No, I think there should be some kind of license or whatever, to make sure the person is responsible. Ban the Deed Not the Breed!

NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not the Pit Bulls we should be scared of but their owners.
I think there should be more severe punishment for the irresponsible Pit owners, taking the dog and putting it down is not the answer. They'll get another and make more statiscs.
Murders, rapists and child molesters are getting off too easy also, make some examples in punishment and they will start thinking.
A dog is a dog, you bring home a sweet, innocent baby and it becomes what you make it.
I do not own Pit Bulls, but I know people who do, some are rescue dogs, the owners couldn't handle them....... if you have no experience with a dog any terrier is not a good first breed.
I am a dog breeder and have an extensive Puppy Questionnaire you need to fill out even before we start talking puppies.

We are having the same issue in Australia. They have to be kept in a cage when not on a lead.
The problems with pitbulls is there reputation. The idiots that buy it think that they are a status symbol, "I own a tough dog so I am tough" they don't look after them or train them and then let them run wild. The responsible owners are then punished.
Unfortunately the other problem is the fact that these dogs were originally bred to fight so there is that underlying thing in there nature. That is not to say that with the right amount of love and training they can not be perfect dogs.
I think the government needs to spend there time and money monitoring the owners instead of the dogs.

I don't think that pitbulls or any breed should be banned. It most definately is the people involved with them that is what is giving them the bad reputation, training them to be nasty and allowing them to run free.
BUT, they aren't going to kill people cause they are stupid, so likely the only thing they can do is to ban the breed that is the strong dog that people are allowing to hurt people.
People don't learn lessons, this has been ongoing for years now. People just plain don't stop fighting the pitbulls, breeding them to be aggressive, selling them to people who fight them, or people who have no knowledge of the breed and don't know how to train and control them.
It's people and their stupidity that is getting a whole breed banned... and other breeds are likely to follow.
People have to take more responsibility for their dogs, their breeding, the dogs they produce and what happens to them, people have to do more training with their dogs so that they aren't out there hurting people. The more people in power see the dogs out there hurting kids and old people, the more they see no other option but to get rid of them all.

No, bad owners should be banned. The dog is considered more dangerous then others because of its potential to do harm because of its sheer strength. So then you get people who obtain this dog because of its strength and raise a poorly socialized animal. Maybe only people who can prove they are responsible dog owners should be allowed to have them. I think this about having children also. I think there are many people out there that shouldn't have either dogs or children. Both should be a privilege, not a right.

A lot of people abuse their pit bulls and raise them to fight, which in my eyes is a terrible fate for the poor dogs. Why allow this torture to continue by letting anyone anywhere own a pitbull without know what kind of home the dog is going to? I'd rather make breeding pitbulls illegal than see the dogs go through this horrible torture.

I don't like the idea of killing any animal, but these dogs have a horrible reputation for a good reason. Why would any sane person with children ever want to own this particular breed? If they don't start removing them from communities, then they better start throwing these idiot owners into prison when their pit bulls attack anything!

SB 861 is a California specific proposal passed in 2005. It would not require killing dogs. It allows communities to pass a mandatory spay neuter law and require breeding licenses for those who wish to breed.
Given the pet overpopulation problem I am not necessarily against this.
