I've had numerous dealings with the police over the last 40 years, as complaintant, witness, suspect, and just "Hanging with the wrong folks!"
The only times they were anything less than courteous, polite and professional were during my "stupid period"! When I went out of my way to be a pain in the A**!
Once I got smart, learned to follow the officer's directions, and shut up and listen ... even when I was viewed as a suspect, everything went fine.
You don't have to love the officer, just respect him or her and their authority! "Yes officer", "no sir", and "thank you officer" will buy you a lot more than "STUPID PIG!" and "ain't you gonna be late getting to the donut shop?"
Done it both way (Yes, I did ask an officer if I was making him late to the donut shop once, big ticket! BIG mistake!).
You treat them OK, they treat you OK, it's all good!

Police are not cruel it's the people that they come across that are cruel and make there job 10x harder and more damn paperwork. How to change there mentality, (that's how you spell it) change your mentality, if the officer says turn around and put your hands in the air, don't sit there and argue with them, and ask questions and keep putting your hands in your pocket, That just makes there job harder cause they have to talk over you and repeat their directives, and have to pull their weapon out!! Just turn around and do what the officer requests, and then later you can ask questions!! This will keep a lot of officers from going hands on and possibly hurting you or them getting hurt or killed!

The reason police act the way they do is due to the simple reason of they do not possess interpersonal communication skills. Most law enforcement officers have a totalitarian mind set.By having the right to deny you your freedoms, this gives then an god complex. Police were once viewed as helpful, now they are viewed as nothing more than thugs wearing a uniform. We have all heard or seen on local news outlets of police committing crimes them selves and denying people there due process rights, yet nothing is ever done to them when they break the law.The courts have failed the American citizens for protecting there constitutional rights against the police powers of this country, and as a result the police run around in organized gangs and terrorize citizens

Because there are no checks on him. Check out my page www.rupertcops.com a site about crooked cops in my town.
I expose their missdeeds and it seems to work. Beatings are way down. Right now we are trying to get an FBI investigation into a battery and witness intimidation under color of law against a cop and a PO. Both cases stem from them trying to hide crimes of cops.

Police have to be hardlined because if they meet up with someone who is a criminal and they don't know it yet and they are being lax. Many times the police officer will end up getting hurt/killed.
