I'd be careful using a strong bleach solution in something plastic...bleach can cause some kinds of plastic to break down. I'd advise washing with normal dish soap, letting it soak a little before rinsing and rinsing and rinsing and rinsing. Then put a half cup of baking soda in and fill with water and let it set overnight. Again, rinse, rinse, rinse. The lemon juice idea might work, too, but I'd do that before the baking soda, not after. good luck...hope this helps.

Hey, that happened to me too when we got a new refrigerator. The water tasted/smelled like plastic. It was kinda hard to get rid of that taste. I think for your situation, you should just rinse the inside or your cooler with soap. Keep on rinsing and drying until the smell is gone.
Hope that HELPS.

Soak with a mix of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Rest one hour rinse and try again repeat with increasing parts of bleach until taste is better. Bleach had chlorine and that is why it works. Will also work on a moldy thermos.

Wash it w/ baking soda and water using a fresh, new sponge. Rinse well and let it air out for a day.

(Baking soda is non-toxic & removes odors.)

Try adding some lemon juice for the first few days.
