Okay, in search for the greatest cat litter known to man I have tried several.
Special Kitty (walmart) Clumping litter- most bang for your buck. I use this stuff almost exclusively. The price is right- 5.00 or so for 28 lbs.- and the clumps are easy to remove.
Tidy cat- Pretty good stuff, did not seem to work much better then Special Kitty though.
Fresh Step- Same as above, not bad, but not much different performance then Special Kitty.
Yesterday's News- horrible stuff, soggy bits of newspaper everywhere, no help in the smell area.
Pine something- can't remember the name, but it is little pine pellets. Not too impressed. Smell was a little better then Yesterday's news, but you basically end up with a bunch of sawdust.
Chicken feed- I literaly used chicken feed. Not too great in the smell department. It did soak up the urine pretty well, but that made it hard to clean out because the urine was so well hidden in the feed.
Arm and Hammer- Many people swear by this stuff. Even some of the animal shelters say they prefer it. I have never used it myself.
Sicicone beads- Very cool stuff, but also very pricey. The smell factor was pretty good, until I couldn't figure out what to keep and what to throw out when I was cleaning the box. The beads soak up the urine, but then it gets left in the box and things start to get pretty gamey. Too pricey unless you know just how to use that kind of litter.
Cedar chips- Weird, but it can be used. My cats are not picky, they just want a clean place to pee, so they did not fuss when I used the chips. I use to just throw out the whole mess every 3 or 4 days, depending on how many cats I had. The smell really was kept down well and the bag was HUGE so it lasted forever. I don't know why I quit using it. I guess it was having to store that huge bag of chips.
Hope this helps.

My cat likes the (Dutch -Albert Heyn) store brand, a coarse clay litter. It's my cat's choice, I could probably get him used to something else gradually by mixing the litters, but I've tried a few other litters -clumping litter and recycled newspaper litter because I thought those would be nice to use, and once I got him another brand of clay litter when his own was sold out. Every time he was *VERY* unhappy about it and since I had no great compelling reason to switch I didn't put him through that.
I'm not sure what my cat likes about this particular litter, but he can sure make it clear that anything else is not acceptable!

I get the Special Kitty kind at Wal-Mart. It ain't fancy and doesn't have all that "crystals" and stuff in it, but it works really well. I have used this for more than 3 years now and it is great. You can't beat the price either. Even when other stuff goes on sale, it isn't as good of a price.
(You have to figure out how much you are paying per pound to see what the price really is, because if you just be like, oh a bag of this kind is cheaper than that kind, it may be, but it has less pounds in it too -- do you get what I am saying?)
I get a 28 pound box of Special Kitty for about $5.50 and most other stuff is like 14 or 16 pounds for $7.89 or something.
Keep in mind however, that some cats won't use certain types of litter. I just got lucky, both of mine do just fine with this kind.
Best of luck and give your kitty a pat for me!!!

I have 6 cats in the house and I use crystal litter from Target. (Just about any crystal litter brand works the same. Target is the best value for me). In the shop and cat room I use Tidy Cats Multiple Cat Formula Scoopable Litter (blue lid on the bucket) because it clumps the tightest and is often on sale. Another factor you should consider is what you're feeding your cats and how it affects the stink factor. I only feed my cats IAMS dry and on the stink-o-meter regular name brand cat food is a 10 and IAMS is a 2.

Silica (it's not silicone) cat litters are the best. They come in pearl or crystal form, the crystals being rougher textured and the pearls are round. They are more effective for smell and urine absorbtion. They are more expensive, but you don't have to change the litter as often, just scoop out the poop. Target sells generic litter for about $12 for 8 lbs which is better than a pet store who usually charges $10 for a 4lb bag. Also, Trader Joes sells 4lb boxes for under $6.

Special Kitty - It's about the most reasonable and most of it is practically the same stuff. I avoid the clumping stuff because the cat doesn't like it, and also hates the kind that's scented. I'd figure that you're better off saving money on litter and spending money on proper food.

The best I've found is the silicone based beads - they are marketed under several different brands. They have no scent of their own and they absorb all the odors so your house doesn't have a litter box smell. They cost more but they last longer if you scoop. Get the square shaped ones; the round ones roll all over the place.

Not the cheapest and the most expensive. Pick ones with baking soda in it. And the key to your kiddie, is cleaning the cat box daily. That is the best way to keep down the smell of the box.
