Actually, we Episcopalians do not considers ourselves to be Protestant. We consider ourselves to be the "Middle Way" between Protestantism and Catholicism, with our faith resting on scripture, reason, and tradition. That's why the term Via Medea crops up so much in discussion.
Episcopalians are liturgical, so the structure of our services is very similar to Catholics. However, there are profound differences between the two faiths on the question of doctrine, hierarchy, etc.

The Catholic church is the first Christian church, and all the churches that broke from that are called Protestant.
There are many Protestant churches. Some have moved a little from the Catholic church, and some have changed so far from the Catholic church that they would go so far to sat that the Catholic church and any like it are not Christian.
That said, the Episcopalian church is very closely related to the Catholic church, with very minor changes, the biggest being the lack of a pope.
