the county will have info on taxes, see the clerk or assessors office. you have to qualify for a number such as operating a business where you buy inventory for resale, running a factory that manufactures goods, or operating a farm are typical in many states. the exemption allows you to purchase items without the sales tax added. this is done because it is expected you will resell the item and collect tax then, or will make/grow items that will be sold and tax collected. so it is not exactly a "free ride". there will be a lot of paperwork involved as you will have to prepare tax forms to show how much you have sold and to send in the state taxes due on those sales. some states require monthly reporting, other collect on a fiscal year basis.

That depends upon which AL tax you are claiming exempt status from.
