what is the glomerular filtrate

The glomerular filtrate is fluid and material that actually passes THROUGH the glomerulus and into the tubular lumen. Things like proteins (especially albumin) do not pass through the glomerulus, and are retained within the blood.

GLOMERULAR FILTRATION

A. Role: formation of the initial fluid entering the nephron

B. Composition of Glomerular Filtrate:
ultrafiltrate of plasma, due to size-selective filtration: nonselectively permeable to small particles but not very permeable to larger particles, such as blood cells and plasma proteins, so contains all the dissolved substances at the same concentration as in blood plasma up to the size of plasma proteins

Glomerular filtrate is the fluid that is filtered from blood in Bowman's Capsule that enters the nephron and eventually becomes urine.

It is called glomerular filtrate because it is filtered through the glomerulus.

A glomerulus is a capillary tuft surrounded by Bowman's capsule in nephrons of the vertebrate kidney. It receives its blood supply from an afferent arteriole of the renal circulation. Unlike most other capillary beds, the glomerulus drains into an efferent arteriole rather than a venule. The resistance of the arterioles results in high pressure in the glomerulus aiding the process of ultrafiltration where fluids and soluble materials in the blood are forced out of the capillaries and into Bowman's space.
