why would a pc repair shop feel it needed to wipe a hd clean and do a complete fresh full install of windows 2000 pro instead of just doing an upgrade if the pc already has windows me on it?

Why would you install 2000 instead of XP?

Windows ME was a disaster, (long story), eventually Microsoft fixed most things so they worked.
ME runs on something called FAT, 2000 Pro can run either on FAT, (not very well), but was made to run on NTFS. (as you can see, different systems, you'd be upgrading something incompatible).

You CAN upgrade, but usually end up with a huge host of errors. The shop don't want to fix your computer for free later. Be happy, they're trying to do both of you a favor.

I'll ask again, why not XP. XP is 2000 Pro with most of the bugs fixed, especially having to do with DVD writing and multimedia.

Vista isn't a proven system yet, XP is the choice for a Microsoft product.

Got it?

Well because ME is not based on NTFS file system and usually upgrades from ME to 2000 leave stuff behind that just isn't right. So the best solution is indeed to install it clean.

Now that being said if you want to upgrade you can and during the upgrade be sure to chose to convert the file system. Also expect some things to just not work once your finished.

Windows ME has been beset with problems since day one. If it were my computer I would do exactly what the repair shop did. Do a clean install.

although upgrades seem smart at first on the whole they are just bad news. they leave lots of confusing commands and redirections that the new operating system messes up. besides its kinda a more complicated process.
