Well, the first thing I would look at is where the trees would be growing. What kind of place do palm trees like to grow? In other words, what sort of soil do they prefer? What amount of rainfall? What level of nutrients? And anything else about the area that might affect the trees. Now think about pine trees - do they like the same kind of area? Are the conditions that work for the palm trees going to also work for the pine trees?
I would get as much information on habitat preferences as possible for the two sorts of trees, and see if there are any differences. That should open up a whole bunch of questions for you to work on, and give you a good essay.
