Well, in the Bible there were several cases where notable people had more than one wife/concubine at a time (a concubine was a woman, often a slave, who was attatched to a man, usually her mistresses' husband, and who, under the laws, held more than fiancee status but less than full-blown wife status) - i.e. Jacob/Israel had two wives and two concubines, Abraham had a wife and a concubine, Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines...
Poligamy in the United States became illegal in the last half of the 19th century, largely as something of a knee-jerk reaction to accusations made against the Mormon Church, which was practicing poligamy on a limited basis at the time. The Mormon Church officially ended the practice in 1890 (though there hadn't been any officially Church sanctioned plural marriages for some time prior to that), and nowadays is grounds for excommunication from the Church (so I guess you could say that on those grounds it's a sin, but I suppose that really only means something if you happen to follow Mormon doctrine).

Actually regarding Christianity, polygamy is not forbidden. Christianity is the fulfillment of Judaism, it shouldn't really refute the laws of the Old Testament. Like Jesus says in Matthew, he has came to add onto the law.
Christianity is like Judaism and Islam, it accepts the validity of polygamy though the vast majority of adherents don't endorse it. Jesus said polygamy was acceptable. It depends on the society, with the coming of Christian schisms like Catholicism, marriage was viewed between man and woman.

And the christians are always crticising Islam for polygamy but their books never stated otherwise. They say polygamy is wrong, but committing adultery is ok with them.
You are all playing a game of "follow the preacher" and "monkey see, monkey do"

It was never mentioned in the bible.
It was only said when 2 people married, it become one flesh and one body. It does not say these people cannot marry a second time. Based on the idea, you would not be considered as committed adultery, since you are married.

actually it was never a sin. HOWEVER . St. Paul suggested in the NT that to be a leader inthe church one should only have one wife ( to avoid distractions from spiritual matters) and over the years that became the norm and was finally passed into law in a lot of countries. There are no biblical scriptures that Forbid having more than one wife.

Polygamy may have been in the bible but was not condoned by God. That was man bending the rules. Marriage a sacrament of God, is one man and one woman

let me preface this that I believe in God and Jesus but to be honest when I read about this here is what my mind thinks..the bible was written by men and the men of the Old testament times lived in a time when polygamy was accepted..later it wasn t as accepted so they wrote about it being more a sinful thing..maybe to accept it as not challenging the validity of the bible you have to say that when Jesus came he changed some things and it is as simple as that..to me inconsistencies have always plagued my faith because when there are inconsistencies in time periods of the bible it makes me think its more men writing down what they think is good to do..part of me thinks God would be completely consistent..but I also don t think I m smarter than God so I m open to explanation on that one

it never did this is just the result from living in a country who changed the laws to suit the requests of their citizens america abolished this allowence only to ccreate a larger problem. one of where there are now millions of single unwed mothers and many men just walking around with children who do not even know who their fathers are. one more twist of irony i find in this law is it is more exceptable in this country to have a mistress with absolutly no consequence in having a mistress. meaning no one is forced jail time for this injustice and violation of the sanctity of marriage but you will go to jail if caught having more then one spouce in this ountry. it is just one more prime example of a country who claims to be religious but yet they go against gods word.

Genisis 1. God made the first family. Adam and Eve. NOT Adam, Eve, Lisa, Julie, and Stephanie. When you live outside this context, you are setting yourself up for disaster!
