The first question I need to ask is does your computer meet min. system requrements to add XP?

Pentium II, III, Celeron, compatible or better CPU running at a speed of at least 300 MHz

64MB RAM minimum (128MB recommended)

2GIG hard drive space with 640MB free

CD-ROM or DVD drive from which to install Windows or other software

A monitor, keyboard, mouse or other pointing device

If you plan to listen to sounds played by Windows, you will need a sound card & speakers.

A modem for dialup connection to the internet

A network card (if you want to connect to a network)

Next I also recomend Partition Magic but I would recomend deleting the partion you are useing now this will free up all your computers hard drive and will remove all files so if you have things you want to save back them up (flash drive, data cd, data dvd)

This would be called a fresh install e-mail me if you want me to walk you through it.

Are you trying to install by booting from CD or are you trying to run the disk within Linux? Are you using an upgrade version of XP or a full version? You will need a full version if you are not upgrading from an earlier version of Windows.

it is probably having trouble reading and reformatting the hard drive (windows can not recognize all the different Linuxes file formats. try downloading partition logic(( IT IS FREE)
and burn it to a CD. then use it to format the hard drive in to NTFS. I have had this problem and this is how i solved it.
hope this helps

You need to delete the boot records.

Use http://dban.sourceforge.net/ and nuke the drive. Then Windows should install fine.
