"According to Newsweek, nearly half (48 percent) of the public rejects the scientific theory of evolution; one-third (34 percent) of college graduates say they accept the Biblical account of creation as fact."

You've improperly analyzed your own statistics.

The above facts mean that a majority (52 percent) of Americans ACCEPT the scientific theory of evolution. It also means that a majority (66 percent) of college graduates do NOT accept the Biblical account of creation as fact.

Given that this country started as a Puritan theocracy in which probably 100% of everyone DID believe in literal creationism, the establishment of a majority that does NOT believe in literal creationism a few hundred years later is actually symbolic of a growing trend towards secularism in the American public.

All that is only compelling if they are unbiased facts...I tend to believe they are not...Christianity is on the decline I am sorry to say.....True, there arent that many people that dont believe in god at all....

But, more and more of the people are walking away from your organized religion..All the controversy is showing the true colors of organized religion...It is nothing but an Idea that has a dark side of corruption...

What it boils down to is...If you actually talk to the public, you will find that religion on the whole is on a decline...The statistics and facts that you recieve are biased and controlled by where they are asked...The greatest group of christian populations are in the third world countries...And the only reason that is, because they are hungry and want some food...

Sorry, buy your polls really dont mean crap...I am not an atheist...I am agnostic, which seems to be the growing trend....Organized christianity is on its way out...All religions fall, and christianity isnt going to be any different....I sure hope you dont find out you wasted your time...

It is immaterial whether or not the "public" rejects the theory of evolution if it is, in fact, true. The Catholic Church rejected the theory that the Earth revolved about the Sun but were proven to be incorrect in their concept that the Earth was the center of the Universe, that after their sentencing to death those who proposed such "heresy". Simply, the acquisition of a college degree does not then qualify one to condemn the Theory of Evolution; those graduates may have majored in the Arts rather than having pursued a scientific degree. Numbers and per centages can be manipulated to present whatever the "cruncher" wishes to convey. Purportedly, ninety per cent of the population believes in god; even an overwhelming majority such as that proves nothing; it means only that ninety per cent of Americans may be deluded!! Our Constitution protects the rights of Atheists to their disbeliefs which are based upon scientific theory or pure obstinacy; it does not matter which!!

Yes, and that's a shame. Evolution is fact, it is like saying half of America doesn't believe in gravity. It doesn't matter how many people believe a certain thing, as facts are facts. Evolution is fact. There is no god is fact. Jesus did not rise from the dead is fact.

Remember, at one time most of the world thought the earth was flat. That didn't change the fact that the earth is round. Eventually, everyone accepted the fact that the earth is round. The same will happen with evolution.

So...what this says is that MORE than half accepts the theory of evolution. It also does not say that all 48% who reject the theory of evolution believes in the Biblical account of creationism, either. I know that 13% who didn't accept the theory of evolution said that they "don't know." (Because I read the actual poll. Did you?) And two-thirds of college grads do not accept the Biblical account of creation as fact. (Shows that the more intelligent you are, the less likely you are to believe in something as idiotic as the Biblical account of creationism.)
Our "days are numbered"? What, are you coming to "get" us?

first of all, i know my days are numbered. they end when i die. and if nearly half the public rejected evolution and 1/3 of college graduates say the bible is 100% true on the creation of the universe then why is it still being taught in schools?

There are three logical fallacies in your statement.

First, is your Appeal to Popularity. A popular belief is not correct just because it is popular.

The second is that you equated atheism and acceptance of the theory of evolution. There may be a strong correlation, but one does not imply the other.

Finally, you assume that the low numbers of people of either category (atheists or those who accept evolution) are on the decline. Its quite possible that both are increasing. I expect that similar polls conducted 50 years ago would have resulted in lower percentages, not higher.

I hate to be the one to break this to you but public consensus does not decide what's true or false, especially when it comes to scientific theories.

And to be fair, the majority of the public voted for George Bush as president twice, the overall level of intelligence really isn't that high, it's no wonder they reject science and put their lives in the hands of a guy who claims God told him to make war on Iraq...

The theory of evolution still makes more sense than believing that the entire human race came from two people. Regarding your statistics: 100% of the people can believe in something that is incorrect and it will still be wrong.

did your mom drop you multiple time when you were a baby? The only people who believe the biblical account of creation is accurate, are people like george W, and Dick Cheney.
