I have an infected tooth (molar) that requires a root canal. i have put this off due to lack of insurance. In the last two weeks i have noticed a slight loss of hearing on the same side as my tooth.
Could this be related?

Yes, the hearing loss you are experiencing could be related to your infected tooth. I understand the costs associated with root canals, but if it is infected you need to be seen by and MD who can prescribe antibiotics.
The swelling from the tooth infection or the infection itself could damage the nerves and cause permanent and irreversible damage which will only cost more in the long term (hearing aids, physical therapy, etc). The nerves that move the muscles in your face and jaw are also in the same area as well as the ones that allow you to feel your face. If these nerves were to be damaged you could lose the ability to move your face and chew.

Yes. An infected tooth is just like having any other type of infection in your body. A badily infected tooth can kill someone with a compromised immune system. The infection can spread to your brain and other parts of your body.
Can cause severe headaches, hearing loss, fever, and other things.
At least get to a dentist to get some sort of antibiotic to clean out the infection. It won't fix the problem, which is the decayed tooth, so the infection can come back, but it will give you some relief for now!

I don't know about the hearing loss, but the nerves in the tooth do extend into your jaw. If you don't get it taken care of, you could feel the pain beyond just the tooth itself, possibly up into your jawline.
you could go to a teaching hospital and get the tooth removed for a reduced price.
