Maybe because they work--without pay--on behalf of the poor?

Be careful with $ donations to religious orgs - better to give food or volunteer your time.
Regarding the catholics, I respect and applaud the excellent work that many of them perform on behalf of the poor. But don't give them money. They are a strictly hierarchical organization, and the money flows to the top, just like a ponzi scheme. The church is OBSCENELY rich. Not just the Vatican and its art and gold, but also all the parishes, diocese, and other subdivisions.
When I was a child attending catholic church with my family, I asked my parents why the priest had a cadillac, when jesus said that his followers should give up everything they had... camel and eye of the needle, etc.
A few years ago the Boston diocese was forced to disclose its financial statement as a result of the pedophile epidemic lawsuits. It showed a net worth (assets and financial accounts in excess of any amounts owed) of several hundred million dollars. And because many of its assets were valued at acquisition cost, it is very likely that it is worth several billion $. Most of it's worth is in its real estate, but they also own media companies and an investment company, for example. The Boston diocese is one of the largest in the US, but there are hundreds of such dioceses worldwide.

I'm not Christian, but nuns do a lot to help the poor. And another great thing about monks and nuns is that they do not have children, therefore they don't add to the population crisis. Plus, you should know that monks make REALLY GOOD BEER AND CHEESE!
Someone mentioned the Christian Brothers... did you know that they used to beat and abuse many of those orphans in Dublin, and that the boys often tried to escape, even when it meant cutting their hands on the fences?

I wouldn't donate to any Charity unless I saw it in operation.
Go to Africa, find a soup kitchen that feeds anyone and buy them some food to serve.
That's playing it safe.
OR go to you local shelter. If they serve Easter Dinner, Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners, pay part of their food bill or make an arrangement to pay for some food to them.
THEN you know you are getting to the bottom line.
With a donation to a charity HOW much goes to the FLEET of MERCEDES BENZES and HOW MUCH goes to SOUP to feed the poor.
At a local kitchen you don't even have to donate. Just serve or clean up for a few hours.
You KNOW you're doing something good when you hand a plate of Turkey, Potatoes, Greens, Biscuit and Coffee to some guy or girl in rags.

My church donates $1 million a year to missions--that is feeding, building, and most importantly, teaching other nations all over the world about the gift found in the love of Jesus.
Missionaries don't get paid by the way, I've been one in several places around the world.

No. Nuns and monks have good intentions, and you can expect them to try to help people, but it'll make more of a difference to donate to the poor directly. If you donate to the nuns or monks or priests, the money will be "filtered" through them and the poor receive less. I'm not saying that they are taking the money, but financially, it's just not as efficient.

Since much of their work is to aid the poor, it is a way to enable them to provide help to others. Even if you made a donation to feed the poor and hungry, there are expenses to be paid in order to run such an operation.

good question. i am not a christian but i can say that logically when you donate money to support a nun so she can eat and she takes care of people in africa whos whole families have been wiped out from a huge epidemic such as aids it is logial. many nuns over the years have been vitims to rape and unbelievable attacks from the very people they are trying to help, paying people to just sit and prey that does not make sense to me in the least. as a muslim we have a story that states a man who did nothing but prey all day long ad devoted all of his time to the masjid (mosque) was deemed by the local people as a very good man etc.. when the prophet muhammud sallahualayhewasallam came around the man jumped at the chance to meet him. the prophet said to him who takes care of your expenses while you sit here and prey all day? the man replies that his brother works for him and supplies him with all the basic nessecities for his life style. the prophet replied to him verily your brother worships allah (god) more then you do.in islam working is a form of worship. you are taking responsibility to take care of your family and paying your zackat (charity) it is a responsibility in islam for muslims to help out the poor and donate money to the needy. there for your question contains a lot of merit and more people who should really think about where their money is going. good question!

If you are referring to Catholic Nuns and Monks they receive no remuneration for their work. Some nursing orders tend to the sick and poor for free.
It sounds like you have never heard of St Vincent de Paul, whose Daughter of St Paul have provided nursing services for free to the poor and sick for the past 200 years.
Or about Edmund Rice who with his Christian Brothers provided free education to the orphans and street boys of Ireland?

Because someone has to coordinate, administer and deliver said goods on a consistent basis -- good health certainly helps in those functions -- and nuns and monks are trained in those skills and work for free.
How much more do you want?

I would go with the Nuns
They feed a lot more people on a few dollars than the one person you give the money to.
