Those curls were very easy to create without today's fancy hair styling tools. Get ahold of Bobby Pins.

You need wet hair for this: Take a small piece of hair wrap it around your finger, which is touching the scalp. Gently push the hair to the head and pin it down (with the bobby pins). Do this all around the head where you want the curls. The smaller the swirl (and less hair) the tighter the curl.

How did they dry the hair? Either while they left with a scarf wrapped around their head, or air dry. Some lucky ladies had a hair dryer where you sat in a chair in the kitchen LOL

Also many women had permanent waves with those small curls and the bobby pins just set the styling!

When dry, take out the pins and gently shake the head or "fluff" with your finger tips. If you brush or comb it you will pull out the curl.

Hair spray can be used after the hair is dry and fluffed. But you need to know it takes practice and more practice.

Actually, you take a duckbill clip - the long ones that look like a big alligator mouth. With your hair towel dried, and a little gel ran through, arrange the curl int he soft 'waves' with a fine tooth comb and your hand. You will be using a zig zag design, all the way down. If you find this to be too difficult, hit your local cosmetology school and let the students work on you. This is one of the things they are taught.

If you are talking about "finger waves" then all you do is start with wet hair and some styling gel (a little goes a long way). Part your hair wherever you want and then comb hair straight. Take your comb starting in the front at the scalp and push hair backwards a bit. Take your finger and hold up against the ridge and comb hair on bottom of finger in other direction. Continue doing this until finished. You can use "clippies" like for the plastic hollow rollers to hold it in place while it dries. Once it dries you can comb it and have very pretty waves.

Try a 2" barrel curling iron, or ionic jumbo rollers. Don't use a sticky styling product because you'll get hard curls. Finish with an aerosol finishing spray like Garnier Full Control spray.
