No amount of wiping is going to clean a fork to surgical cleanliness. When I see people do it in restaurants I think how anal they are and if they are so concerned with the silverware they should stay at home in the sealed compartments of there lives. Grow up, people! The kind of dirt or smudge found on a restaurant fork is not going to kill you. On the other hand, the food they may serve to you prepared by workers you wouldn't dare shake hands with...

I do it. I work at a resturaunt, so it's of habbit (and comfort). I even caught myself polishing a pre-wrapped plastic fork from wendy's with the yellow napkin.

People do all sorts of strange things any more, so on one probably notices. If I saw you do it, I would assume that the dishwasher left spots or dried bits of food on your silverware. I would wonder why you just didn't ask for a clean fork.

I wouldn't see it as rude at all. I wouldn't even think anything of it. People that do need to find better things to do w/their time than give weird looks to those that clean their forks.

Feel free to clean your fork, it's the restaurant's job to provide you with a clean one, if they fail, they should be the ones who are embarrassed.
And don't be afraid to ask for a new one if it's really bad.

It'd be rude to breathe on it and hold it up to the light to make sure you'd polished it enough, in front of the waiter.
Otherwise, polish away.

YES! If your fork or other eating utensil is not to your satisfaction politely ask the server for another.

Not me, but I see it all the time. There's nothing wrong with it. I guess the only people that would complain, are the same people who find it necessary to be rude to people for asking innocent questions here.

It is not proper etiquette to do this, I suggest you ask for a new, clean fork.

I've worked in restaurants; trust me you want to be polishing your cutlery ( with more than just a serviette)
