OK, we do penance for forty days because Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness. But did you ever wonder why he was out there for forty days rather than seven or ten or fifty?
Think back to the Old Testament. Noah and company in the Ark watched rain fall for 40 days and forty nights. Moses was up on Sinai receiving the 10 commandments for 40 days. The Israelites wandered around the desert for 40 years.
So why all these forties? Probably because it is forty weeks that a woman carries her developing baby before a new life can come forth from the womb.
Text: Matt.4: 1-11 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took Him into the holy city; and he had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down; for it is written, 'He will give His angels charge concerning You'; and 'On their hands they will bear You up, Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory; and he said to Him, "All these things will I give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.'" Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.
Hope this clarifies your question!

The Bible is clear that God considers 40 days a spiritually significant time period. Whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days.
Noah; Moses; The spies; David by Goliath's 40 day challenge; Elijah; These were all 40 days of transformations.
The entire city of Nineveh was transformed when God gave the people 40 days to change.
The disciples were transformed by 40 days with Jesus after his resurrection.
Jesus was empowered by 40 days in the wilderness.

The 40 days represents the connection between the first Adam and he second Adam.
If you read carefully you will see and understand that there was a decision made in Heaven that this would be done.
The 1st Adam was in between the woman and the serpent and God said, "you listened to the voice of thy wife, which meant the voice came from the serpent, that devil.
The 1st Adam remember God pulled woman out of him and the second Adam he pulled him out of woman. Look at the similarities in the Garden Adam had gave into the words of e serpent through his wife's mouth.
Jesus who is the second Adam, notice this time He was alone with the devil without the woman and the voice of the serpent could not prevail.
Before that, He constantly hearing the voice of the woman who was chosen and Mary was constantly in His ear and the first time He told her," Woman don't you know I must be about my Fathers business.
Now consider what Adam said," The woman that thou gravest to me".
The second Adam was sent to redeem the first Adam and I believe the time that Adam and Eve spent in the Garden of Eden was 40 days after God created Eve and brought to Adam.
Most people do not Undertand tha the Garden of Eden and where Jesus was nailed to the cross are in a parallel distance to each other.

Jesus went to the desert for forty days before the start of his ministry because it was a cultural custom in that time for a prophet to do so. While he was the son of God, He was also a prophet and therefore observed the custom.

He was mentally and spiritually preparing for his ministry. The number 40 conveys a lot of meaning in the Bible. Example: the Jews wandered in the desert for forty days. It rained for forty days and forty nights in the story of the flood, the kingship of David lasted for forty years, etc.

The fast of Jesus repeats symbolically the wandering of the Jews in the desert for forty years.

He was led about by the Holy Spirit in the wilderness for forty days and his former life in heaven was revealed to him by his Father, Yahweh God. His earthly commission from God was also revealed to him.
Of course, Satan had to go and try to tempt him to sin against God, but Jesus was having none of it and he reminded Satan that it is Yahweh God he must worship and not to be testing God out.
After that, Jesus set out to preach and teach about God's Heavenly Kingdom and the benefits of doing God's Will and how the Way was opened up for mankind to be accepted by God through His Son, Jesus the Messiah.

After he was baptised by John, he went for a walk. God spoke to him and he began to pray. During that time, Jesus was tempted three times by Satan. Each time Jesus pushed Satan out because he knew God loved him and had God in his heart. He knew that he had a mission on Earth to do and wouldn't be persuade by Satan's words. During this time, Jesus proved to himself that he loved God and was strong enough to begin his ministry.

Once he returned, it was then he choose his disciples. And the story continues.
