beretta neo .22lr
browning buckmark .22lr
ruger mkIII .22lr
smith and wesson 22A .22lr

The base models for all of these .22lr plinking pistols is under $300. Definitely a better deal than the small, overpriced Walther. If you want, the above comapnies also offer more target-worthy versions with extra features.

I have inferred from your question; you are not experienced with firearms. It raises the more important question, i.e., what kind of pistol, is safest for the novice. My recommendation, for a type of gun, is a double action revolver. The standard low cost caliber is .22 Long Rifle. Most major gun manufactures, e.g., Ruger, Swith & Wesson, Colt, make a revolver in this very common caliber. Some manufactures include a second cylinder, allowing you to fire the more powerful, and much more expensive .22 Magnum cartridge, in addition, to the .22 Long Rifle cartridge.

Please, master the revolver, before you purchase a sem-auto pistol.

Everyone can give you an opinion but you will have to shoot a gun to see if you like it. The best caliber for target shooting is probably .22 go ot and hold the guns get a feel for them and then make the purchase by how you feel and are you comfortable with the gun so good luck be safe and take a shooters course if you can.

I like the Ruger .22 autos and also the Browning Buckmark. Colt makes a nice one too and I can't recall the name...maybe Woodsman.

For target work, you want a long barrel. Short barrel pistols do not shoot very far well.

The Walter P-22 is a good choice for about $300 and ammo is cheap. Rugers are also good guns and better target ,22 guns than the Walter due to their size and barrel length. Smith & Browning also made/make good .22 target pistols.

Good luck.

I would reccommend buying a paper target for target practice. You are right, a really big gun would be a waste of money to shoot, but if you must have a pistol to shoot at, go to Wal Mart and buy a toy plastic one, they cost less and tend not to cause riccochet and are much cheaper than a p22. LOL

Ruger is probably the best way to go. Good value for the money.
The Ruger Single Six, a single action, six shot, revolver in .22 Long Rifle is a great beginner's gun.

If you must have a semi auto then the Ruger Mark II, also a .22 Long Rifle is a good way to go.

Personally, just for target shooting, I really like Ruger .22's. They are very, very cheap to shoot, reliable and accurate.
