I love playing poker, but I don't consider it a sport. My brother on the other hand, does.

Poker is not a sport but a game. But yet I am a sport fanatic and a poker fanatic at the same time. It's the competition factor. But sport involves physical activity.

Your brother is an idiot. Even ignoring the fact that there is no physial ability needed whatsoever (see raymer, moneymaker, etc) to play, the luck factor is way too high to call in a sport.

Basically, put the 100 best chess players in the world in a round robin tournament, and 1 or 2 will emerge as the best. Put 100 of the best Poker players in the world, and even the absolute best is a very big longshot to win.

Sport? no way

poker is not a sport, but it is a competition. ESPN broadcasts competitions, of which the most popular are sports. the semantics can be argued forever, because poker requires many skills that sports require.

it doesn't shame poker to call it a competitive game and not a sport. people shouldn't feel like they have to "stick up" for NL holdem.

Yes poker is a sport. There are so many of the same elements found in sports and poker. Dedication, Discipline, Patience, Endurance and Love of your game are a few of the similarities. (Doyle Brunson)

I have to agree with him. Poker can be classified as a sport for so many reason.

Take care

I am going to go against the grain and say that yes, i consider Poker a sport, a mental sport. Poker involves alot math, psychology, strategy, and guts, yet you are not competing physically, i do believe it takes mental strength not so much muscle.

If you can drink beer while you play it and be successful, it's a game (i.e. golf, bowling, poker, Golden Tee, pool, darts). I can play poker well when I'm pretty schnokkered so it must be a game.

Poker is a game, not a sport. It irritates me to see it show up on ESPN. Are there no tiddly-wink championships they could be covering instead?

only if you consider shuffling a way to get your heart rate up! Nope, it's a game, not a sport.
