In the very beginning Jesus said; repent and believe in the Gospel, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The Gospel, the true Word of God, is "The Way".

Jesus has done what everyone before him failed to do, that is to overcome their temptations, he proved by example that indeed the Word of God is the way.

Jesus said; the Words that I speak unto you, have made you clean. The Words that I speak unto you are spirit and life, the body profits nothing.

The resurrection is the example that if you not only hear, but do the Word of God, you will not die. Those would save their life will lose it and them that lose their life for my sake (because they believe in the Word of God) shall save it.

Jesus died so that in the resurrection he would live (the Life)

If Jesus didn't come back to life again, there would be no hope for us. His resurrection is very important. If Jesus remained dead, we would pretty much be dead too. So, I think he means that He gives us life thru his resurrection and death.

Jesus is the only one who was raised from the dead by God himself. Jesus agreed to pay the price for humanity's sin by giving his life. He did this out of love for mankind. He walked this earth without sin. At his cruxifiction he took the sin of man upon himself. God raised him to life after 3 days during which time Jesus defeated Satan and his power of sin and death. After spending some time here on earth after his ressurection Jesus went to heaven and presented his pure blood to God as final payment for man's sin. Before that time, man sacrificed animals which only covered man's sin. But the blood of Jesus washed away man's sin. Through Jesus death and ressurection, anyone who receives him as Lord and Savior has eternal life and life more abudantly here on one earth. It means we have everything we need for our spirit, soul, and bodies, and the strength to do what is right, withstand the hard things we experience with grace, a purpose for the things we do. And when our bodies die, we will live with Jesus forever in heaven, where there is no more war or crying. Now That's Life!!! I hope this answers your question.

He is the first to be resurrected from the dead and break the bonds of death and hell on the rest of mankind. He is the life because he offers those who believe on His name the opportunity to have life eternal in the presence of God the Father.
