I applied for a police officer position.. well I put in the application and it is for "pre-screening only" and says "it doesn't mean a vacancy exists, but people will be put on a hiring list." Well I called and set up a time for my written test and they said they were available anytime for months, I could come whenever I wanted.

If I pass the written test then I will take an agility test then have the interview on the same day. The pay is ok, not great.

Does it seem they might have immediate openings, due to the process taking so short? The lady at in Human Resources would not tell me a lot of info..

After you pass those, you'll have the Psych and the background checks to go through. The fastest I've ever seen the process go through is 4 months total, because after you pass everything, you have to wait for an academy start date. Good luck to you.

In Illinois( or at least at my old station) it went something like this: Applications for Police are advertised locally. Dates are given for picking up apps and returning them.

Once app deadline is closed, all applicants are notified to appears for initial phase. Mandatory meeting with spouse etc. Later this is followed by physical test and again later by Psych test.

List is put out . Any of the top three can be offered a position if there is an opening. Hiring list is good for 2 years so every two years they test whether there is an opening or not, just to have an updated list.

This whole process takes about 9 months before anyone gets to the academy, if there is an opening. We usually started with about 60 applicants. Only 40 would show up for 1st round. Maybe 30 for 2nd round and ultimately we would end up with an average of 10-15 names after all was said and done. Keep at it. The process is just the beginning of how things will be going if you are hired. It do be frustrating

I know that if you pass everything and place around 1st to 5th you have a decent chance to be hired within 90 days!
