The jelly that they give before the shot is topical numbing agent, it is similar to what you would use for a sun burn. It does nothing to numb the tooth or the surrounding bone. It is really important that there is adequate anesthesia before a tooth is extracted because not only is the tooth innervated with a nerve, but a lot of the time bone will come out with the permanent tooth being extracted. I have had one patient who insisted on not having an injection. It was awful for both of us. There are many injections that we use to ensure proper anesthesia. If it is a lower molar, they will usually give an injection called INAB. The way we know if it has worked, is when the side of the lip (same side as the shot) goes numb. This will numb half of the lower teeth. For the upper teeth, if we are just extracting one or two teeth, we will usually give a supraperiosteal, that is when we place the injection directly over the apex of the tooth we are going to extract, I will always give a palatal injection as well. With this injection, the tooth and the bone adjacent to it, is all that will become numb.

Why on earth would you ever get a tooth pulled without anethetic. I can tell you it hurts like hell and it feels like someone is trying to rip apart your skull. I had four teeth pulled a few years ago with anesthetic, but my bottom teeth didn't take the anesthethic no matter how much was injected. The dentist told me that was because the bone on the bottom is denser. I felt every single thing and it was pure hell.
So please, use anesthetic

You dont feel it at all. Your mouth is all numb. Dont be worried about getting it pulled out. But the numbing part tastes kind of bad.
I had to get 7 teeth pulled out. I got a few permanent pulled out. =(
I am sorry you had/have to go through all that with the figement

It's terrible to have a tooth pulled even with novocaine. I had to have four pulled for braces and I went to an Oral Surgeon and was put under general to do it. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I would never get an adult tooth pulled without anesthesia. If the dentist has to pull it, it will hurt if it isnt numbed first.

why didn't you tell them you weren't numb yet?
Get the injection, it hurts for a second and then the extraction is almost painless. All you will feel is some pressure.

THERE IS THE FEELING OF YOUR GUMS BECOMING NUMB, THE ACTUAL ANESTHETIC IS GIVEN TO NUMB THE AREA. WHEN THE TOOTH IS PULLED THERE MAY BE A FEELING OF PRESSURE BUT NOT PAIN.
