It is at this Mass that the oils which are used to anoint the sick are blessed. "Is there any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord Jesus."(James 5: 13-16) The oil of the sick is used to strengthen and heal those who are ill and suffering.

It is at this Mass that the oil of catechumens is blessed. The oil is then used prior to baptism to serve as a kind of exorcism prior to baptism. The effects of this oil ward off evil and give strength to grow in faith.

It is at this Mass that the oil of chrism is consecrated. The anointing with sacred Chrism is a sign that Christians are sharers in the kingly and prophetic priesthood of Christ. It is with this oil that newly ordained priests, confirmation candidates, and newly baptized children are anointed. New Churches are also anointed with the sacred Chrism. To the oil of Chrism, a special fragrance called balsam is added. This fragrance reflects the “sweet aroma of Christ” in our midst through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The sacred oils are then distributed to the pastoral leaders for them to use in the parishes throughout the year.

Another element that takes place at the Chrism Mass is the Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service. Because of the intimate link between the oils in the sacramental life of the Church and the ministry of priests, an essential part of the celebration is the renewal of commitment to priestly service by the priests of the diocese. The ordained, in the presence of the assembly, ask for God’s help to remain faithful to their consecrated mission to serve the people of God.

Chrism Mass is usually but not always the thursday befor easter.

American's modern day view of Christmas as a consumer holiday actually started in NY city in the mid 1800's. That's also where the idea of Santa and a tree was first invented.

Just one more on the long list of pagan holidays invented by the Papacy to lure people to give more money to him.
